The Kiwi Pair: The Story Behind Our World Beating Rowers by Hamish Bond & Eric Murray

$40.00 NZD

Category: Sports

Affectionately known as the Kiwi Pair, Hamish Bond and Eric Murray are as dominant a team as we've ever seen. Hamish is considered the most technically proficient rower of a generation, while Murray is known for his huge engine, having set an indoor rowing world record for 18,728 metres in one hour. Yet behind the harmony on the water is an intriguing dynamic. They're two very different people: one an introvert, one an extrovert. One works part time for a share-broking firm, one is a registered marriage celebrant. They spend more time together than with their own wives, they finish each other's sentences, yet it's always been a love-hate relationship. 'When I first met Eric I thought he was an egotistical boofhead,' recalls Hamish. Switching from coaching legend Dick Tonks to their current coach Noel Donaldson was never going to be controversy-free either. Hamish and Eric certainly speak their minds, a candidness that is captured brilliantly in The Kiwi Pair. ...Show more

The Pants of Perspective by Anna McNuff

$28.00 NZD

Category: Sports

Anna is an endurance athlete, adventurer and mischief maker. Once upon a time she represented Great Britain at rowing, but after ‘retiring’ in her mid twenties, she began darting around the world on the hunt for new and exciting endurance challenges. Named by The Guardian as one of the top female advent urers of our time, Condé Nast Traveller also recently included her in a list of the 50 most influential travellers in the world. In 2013 Anna cycled a beautiful Pink bicycle 11,000 miles through each and every state of the USA, from Alaska to Hawaii. Pedalling up to 130 miles a day for 6 months, solo and unsupported, she encountered blizzards, floods and temperatures as low at minus 15C. In January 2015, with no previous experience as a long distance runner, Anna set out on a 2,000 mile run along New Zealand’s Te Araroa trail. Travelling alone for 148 days, she moved through forests, along ridge-lines, over mountain passes, along beaches and across swollen rivers. Running up to 32 miles in a day, she carried all of her belongings in a backpack that was often as heavy at 20kgs. By June 2015 she had become the first person, male or female, to run then length of the country entirely unsupported. In October 2016, Anna began a journey to cycle along the spine of the largest mountain range in the world: The Andes. By the time she returned to the UK in April 2017 she had pedalled through some of South America’s most remote and inhospitable regions, and ascended over 100,000 metres on a bike – more than 11 times the height of Everest. Much closer to home, she has also spent a month cycling across Europe directed entirely by social media, run the length of Hadrian’s wall dressed as a Roman Soldier, and the length of the Jurassic Coast, dressed as a dinosaur. As you do. Passionate about the positive impact that adventure and sport can have on the lives of youngsters, Anna uses her human-powered journeys as a platform to inspire and enable kids to get outside, and get exploring. ...Show more

The Warm Sun on My Face: The Story of Women's Cricket in New Zealand by Trevor Auger and Adrienne Simpson

$70.00 NZD

Category: Sports

Despite what happened at Lord's in 2019, New Zealand has won a Cricket World Cup. It was at Lincoln in December 2000 that New Zealand beat Australia to win the Women's World Cup. The first recorded cricket match in New Zealand between teams of women had been played in the Wairarapa as long ago as 1867 and the New Zealand women played their first Test match in 1935. In 2014 Debbie Hockley became the second New Zealander after Sir Richard Hadlee to be inducted into the International Cricket Council Hall of Fame. This is the story of women's cricket in New Zealand, from its earliest humble origins to its glory days on the international stage. It is also the story of the women who have come to be recognised amongst the very best in the world at their sport. It is the story of a game played for the sheer love of it, and of the hard work of the dedicated souls who built and sustained women's cricket, often in the face of challenge and adversity. Most of all it is the story of every woman who relished the warm sun on her face as she enjoyed the Trevor Auger has been involved with cricket almost all his life. A senior club cricketer in his day, he had earlier been the press scorer at international matches at Eden Park during the 1970s, taking inspiration from working alongside some of the top cricket writers from New Zealand and around the world. He contributes a regular column to the Auckland Cricket website, and he is a member of the Auckland Cricket Judicial Committee. Adrienne Simpson was a passionate cricket follower. She began research for a history of women's cricket in New Zealand in the late 1990s and was able to collect a vast trove of material. Unfortunately she took ill and passed away in 2010 before she could finish the book. Her family donated her to the New Zealand Cricket Museum, and her tireless efforts are the foundation upon which this book has been built. ...Show more
