Letters of a Naturalist - The Field Accounts of Richard Henry of Resolution Island

Author(s): Richard Treacy Henry; Susanne Hill; John Hill; Victoria Jaenecke

Natural History

Richard Henry was New Zealand's first wildlife ranger and champion of our flightless birds.  He was appointed caretaker of Resolution Island in 1894, living and working -often alone- for fourteen years in wild and remote Dusky Sound.

Henry's perceptive observations and descriptions of the wildlife of Dusky Sound, and his valiant efforts to save kakapo and kiwi from the advancing tide of invasive species sweeping the mainland, were pioneering contributions to the conservation in New Zealand.

Beautifully illustrated throughout with more than 500 contemporary and historic photographs, drawings, and maps, Letters of a Naturalist brings together Richard Henry's charming letters, natural-history notes, and early reminiscences, giving a complete and colourful picture of this truly remarkable man.
