Geology

This map illustrates the complex geology of the Fiordland area, from Martins Bay and the Hollyford valley in the north, to Solander Island in western Foveaux Strait. The geology of the Fiordland massif is dominated by Carboniferous to Cretaceous granitic and dioritic rocks of the Median Batholith, which intrude Early Paleozoic metasedimentary schists and gneisses. Cretaceous and Cenozoic sedimentary rocks are preserved in basins of eastern and southern Fiordland. Offshore faults, including the active Alpine Fault extending southwest from Milford Sound are also shown on the map.
