Stars of Orion

Author(s): Diane Miller

Children's

The story follows the adventures of a boy in 1861 who sets off from the early town of Dunedin to find his father, a digger at Gabriel's Diggings. There were no roads, no bridges, no maps and no shops along the 80 mile trek - and certainly no schools at the goldfields when he gets there! Life on the goldfields was no easier, but the early adventurers were a hardy lot and determined to make their fortune. The book is suitable for ages 5 to 8 years and can be used on more than one level. Children can enjoy reading an adventure story of a boy heading off alone into an unknown world. It would also be a useful resource for teachers and parents, a "springboard" for discovering more about this period of extreme adventure - the golden decade of New Zealand goldrushes, and the opening up of our southern frontier.
